What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how a brand shows up in the answers AI systems generate — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It isn't about ranking in a list of links; it's about whether and how a brand gets mentioned or cited as a source inside a generated answer. The term Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is used largely interchangeably.

How GEO differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO aims for the best possible position in a results page — the visible unit is a blue link with a snippet. GEO is about whether a brand appears inside an answer that has already been generated: named, paraphrased, or cited with a source link.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Technical SEO — crawlability, structured data, fast load times — remains the foundation GEO builds on.

How GEO works in practice

Generative systems compose answers from a mix of training data and, for services with live retrieval like Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, content fetched from the web in real time. Content that is technically accessible, clearly positioned on its topic, and consistent across multiple sources is more likely to get picked up.

That's not a guarantee: which sources a system actually uses in a given case depends on internal criteria providers don't publish.

How to measure GEO

The common approach is a test-question matrix: realistic questions your audience might actually ask, put to several AI services repeatedly. Each answer gets checked for whether — and how — your brand shows up: named, linked, or not at all.

A single query isn't enough, since generated answers can vary from one request to the next. See 'Measuring AI Visibility' for the full methodology.

Where GEO hits its limits

AI providers don't publish ranking factors, models and their weightings change without notice, and the same question can get a slightly different answer in different sessions. A measurement shows a trend over time, not an exact, reproducible value the way a search-engine position is.

It's also rarely possible to prove which single action caused a change in mention rate — several factors act at once. Anyone promising guaranteed mentions or placements is promising more than can be technically substantiated.

Real-world examples

Example 1: Ask 'Who offers AI visibility monitoring for agencies?' and the answer will vary depending on which providers have clear, structured information about their name, service, and location available online.

Example 2: A brand can be named in an answer without a link back to its site — or cited as a source without being named in the running text. See 'Mention vs. Citation' for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO the same as AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

The terms are used largely interchangeably. Both describe efforts to improve visibility in AI-generated answers; 'GEO' emphasizes the generative creation of the answer, 'AEO' the answer format itself versus a classic results page.

Does GEO replace classic SEO?

No. Technical SEO — crawlability, structured data, load time — remains a prerequisite for content being accessible at all. GEO adds the question of how content gets used inside a generated answer.

Can you guarantee a mention in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

No. AI providers don't publish ranking factors, and answers can vary from one request to the next. Careful GEO work reduces uncertainty, but it can't guarantee a mention.

Which AI systems matter for GEO?

The ones mentioned most often are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Which ones matter depends on your specific audience.
